The history of AlmaU began with a small Management School back in 1988, which became the first swallow to produce a new generation of managers for our young country.
In 1996, when the first stage of development was successfully completed, the Almaty School of Managers (ASM) was transformed into the International Academy of Business (IAB).
25 years after its creation, the IAB has reached the next round of the upward spiral – the Academy has received the status of a University. In accordance with the new strategy, in 2014 the university set a course to create an entrepreneurial university model.
The university has provided management training to the first Kazakhstani entrepreneurs, the first MBA and DBA programs in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the best teachers and in-demand graduates.
Today, AlmaU has 10 Schools, 4 centers, the Institute for Educational Development and AlmaU Extension: Graduate School of Business, School of Management, School of Economics and Finance, School of Politics and Law, School of Digital Technologies, School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, School of Hospitality and Tourism, School of Media and Cinema, AlmaU Sharmanov School of Health Sciences, The School of Transformative Humanities, the Center for Urban Studies, the Center for Creative Industries and the Center for Sports Management.
The education takes place in 3 languages: Kazakh, Russian and English, in more than 20 specialties, including: management, finance, marketing, catering and hospitality, international relations and economics, information technology, digital filmmaking, management of creative industries, etc.

The MBA programs of the AlmaU Graduate School of Business for 10 years (2013-2023) were the only ones in Central Asia and Kazakhstan accredited by AMBA, Great Britain (2013-2026). In 2021, the Graduate School of Business and the AlmaU School of Hospitality and Tourism received the results of joint accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and Business Graduates Association (BGA) (2021-2026).
AlmaU Graduate School of Business and School of Hospitality and Tourism is accredited by the Business Graduates Association (BGA) (2021-2026). In 2023, the third AlmaU school, the School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (2023-2026), was accredited by the BGA.

At the annual meeting of PRME (Principles of Responsible Management Education) in New York in June 2023, the SDG Legion AlmaU student club was awarded the second place among the best teams of the PRME Student Organizations Award
