AlmaU actively supports the 17th Sustainable Development Goal (Partnerships for the Goals) through organizing conferences and engaging with various stakeholders. Regular conferences are held on sustainable development, gathering experts, NGOs, government representatives, and the academic community to share experiences and develop joint solutions.
Programs:
AlmaU attracts prominent researchers and practitioners for organizing R&D activities. The university specializes in the following fields: entrepreneurship, management, business, education, knowledge management, social responsibility, and regional development. AlmaU promotes research synergy in collaboration with business, government, and society, aiming to ensure: 1) integration of research results into the educational process; 2) the implementation of best practices into curricula and research; 3) commercialization of projects and research outcomes. AlmaU secures government grants and external funding from international organizations, NGOs, and companies to enhance research results and scale. The development of a research culture is achieved through infrastructure, incentive systems, databases, and the operation of AlmaU’s labs and research centers. Regarding the laboratories, there is open access for researchers, ensuring they have the opportunity to utilize the facilities and engage in collaborative research.
The SDG and ESG Center’s mission is to promote the sustainable development agenda, nurture new leaders, and create innovative solutions for sustainable development in society, government, and business. Establishing international partnerships between the SDG and ESG Center, UN agencies, and the corporate sector is crucial for implementing ambitious SDG and ESG projects. AlmaU, as a socially responsible university, extends its mission to contribute to achieving the SDGs by 2030.
SDG Legion Student Club: The SDG Legion Student Club at AlmaU was founded in September 2022. SDG Legion is a student organization that promotes, spreads, and implements the ideas of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In cooperation with the Institute of Economic Research, they organized the business game “Mission 2030.” With the support of Air Astana and Huawei, they also held the Youth Forum on “Innovative Solutions and Leadership in ESG and the UN SDGs,” the Women’s Forum “Girls Changing the World for the Better,” ALMA MUN (Model UN), and a charity drive to collect items for residents of Ekibastuz during the power plant accident. They conducted research on “Harassment of Girls in Public Transport.” SDG Legion members are committed to promoting socially responsible education. Their active approach includes using social media and academic research to spread ideas and educate young people.
UN PRME Initiative: AlmaU is proud to be a signatory of the PRME community. We strive to align our strategies and operations with global goals and PRME Principles. AlmaU, as a socially responsible university, has been a PRME signatory since 2009. Its progress reports are available here. From 2020 to 2022, AlmaU President Assylbek Kozhakhmetov was a member of the PRME board. “Principles for Responsible Management Education” (PRME) is an initiative founded in 2007 with the support of the United Nations. Based on the “Six Principles,” PRME engages business and management schools to ensure they equip future leaders with the skills needed to balance the economy with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and align academic institutions with the work of the UN Global Compact. As a voluntary initiative signed by over 800 institutions worldwide, PRME has become the largest organized partnership between the UN and higher education institutions related to management.
PRME Eurasian Chapter: The mission of the Eurasian Chapter, launched in 2021, is to attract new members from the region to the PRME network, integrate responsible management education principles into academic and research activities in regional universities, and provide international opportunities for meaningful knowledge exchange and networking for chapter participants. In 2020-2021, AlmaU held discussions with the PRME Secretariat team about launching a regional chapter for the Eurasian region, which was supported by partner universities – Narxoz (Kazakhstan), IBS RANEPA (Russia), AUCA (Kyrgyzstan), Tashkent Chemical-Technological Institute (Uzbekistan), and the Academy of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan).
Elective Courses: AlmaU offers disciplines and electives related to sustainable development. These courses cover topics such as ecology, resource management, and socio-economic development. Students study sustainable development principles, analysis methods, and practical approaches to solving environmental and social problems, helping them form a comprehensive understanding of the modern world and its challenges:
