Gender justice starts here: AlmaU brought together thought leaders at an international forum

17.11.2025

On November 14, AlmaU hosted the international forum “Law Against Gender Discrimination: Challenges and Strategies” – a key platform where experts, judges, scholars, representatives of international organizations, and students discussed ways to strengthen human rights and promote gender equality.

The event highlighted AlmaU’s strategic mission: to prepare a new generation of specialists who think critically, act ethically, and are ready to transform the legal system by embedding the principles of justice and equality.

Opening the forum, AlmaU’s First Vice-Rector Timur Buldybayev noted:

“Universities must contribute to bringing such topics to light so they can become subjects of broad public discussion. Our future graduates must recognize their importance. Special thanks to our partners and guests – judges, representatives of the prosecutor’s office, the legal community, and the academic community – to everyone who shared this morning with us.”

One of the key speakers was Zhanna Urazbakhova, a well-known lawyer and member of the Almaty City Bar Association. She emphasized that public dialogue and professional training are critically important in combating violence:

“Perpetrators who remain unpunished do not stop. The cycle of violence can only be broken through victims’ reports and by openly discussing such crimes as a society. We must begin with training competent specialists and ensuring proper funding for this field.”

The discussions also featured:

• Dinara Kuikabayeva, Judge of the Medeu District Court
• Maksat Abirov, Head of the HR Department of the Almaty Region Prosecutor’s Office
• Zhanara Ualikhanova, Judge of the Medeu District Court
• Olga Verbovaya, Doctor of Law, Professor at AlmaU
and other experts who made a significant contribution to the conversation.

The forum once again confirmed AlmaU’s role as an intellectual hub shaping the development of legal culture in Kazakhstan. Here, theory meets practice, and the values of equality and human rights become an integral part of the university’s educational mission.
