Responsible Consumption and Production

Description

AlmaU is actively engaged in waste collection and recycling, which corresponds to the 12th Sustainable Development Goal (Responsible Consumption and Production). The campus has a system of separate collection of various types of waste, including plastic and paper. The installed containers allow efficient recycling of secondary materials, minimizing the negative impact on the environment. All those policies extend to outsourced services and the supply chain.

Responsible consumption and production programs
AlmaU actively informs students and staff about the importance of separate waste collection through educational programs and trainings. The University cooperates with local organizations and companies involved in recycling, which ensures the efficient disposal of collected materials. These efforts help to create a responsible attitude towards the environment and contribute to sustainable development in the region.
In 2023, AlmaU University won the collection competition:

“Green University” Project AlmaU

Project Goals:

  • Introduction of ecological principles into the daily life and operations of the University;
  • Raising the overall level of ecological awareness and responsibility for one’s lifestyle among students and staff;
  • Education and engagement of the community in the University’s ecological initiatives;
  • Formation of a new “green” image of the University;
  • Increasing the University’s visibility through the organization of environmental actions.

Areas of Activity:

  • Organization of a waste separation system (plastic, paper, metal, glass, light bulbs, batteries, etc.);

AlmaU has places to reduce plastic waste on campus such as Tazalyk waste boxes on the first floor on the university or plastic waste container near the parking lot, also on different floors on the campus plastik waste boxes.
Recycling program for university waste – partial (up to 20-25% of waste). Organic waste treatment recycled through open dumping, plastic being collected to separate designated areas and then moved to recycling sites in the city; inorganic waste treatment following general state processes. Toxic waste treatment is not applicable, as there is no toxic waste produced. AlmaU works with special utilization centers – Tazalyk (plastic and paper), Samsung (batteries), Coca-Cola Icecek Kazakhstan, Agricultural farms (organic food waste) and others (lamps, common).

  • Resource conservation (electricity, water, paper);

  • Educational activities aimed at forming an eco-culture (organizing waste cleanup events, seminars, lectures, and competitions on environmental preservation);

  • Promotion of an eco-friendly lifestyle;

Survey

  • Introduction of eco-friendly and healthy eating practices;
  • Participation in citywide, district, and international environmental programs;
