AlmaU University is actively working to achieve the 11th Sustainable Development Goal (Sustainable Cities and Communities). This goal is aimed at creating safe, sustainable and inclusive human settlements, which is a key aspect in modern society.
Since the summer of 2021, the concept of “University for the City” has been implemented in the format of coworking and creative space for civil society and the urban community, as well as research and project activities. AlmaU manages a space called “Qaynar Bulaq” (boiling point in poetic translation from Kazakh), a creative space with an area of 335 sq.m.
AlmaU also participates in the Urban October initiative, an international initiative aimed at supporting sustainable urban development. This initiative was launched by UN Habitat and has been held every year in October since 2014. Urban October is the month when everyone talks and thinks about how to make our cities better. The main goal of Urban October is to raise awareness of sustainable urban development and support efforts to improve the quality of life in cities.
The university prioritizes creating a pedestrian-friendly campus, ensuring safe and accessible pathways that enhance the overall experience for students and staff while promoting a sustainable, walkable environment.
The university is negotiating partnership with the local authorities to build an affordable housing dormitories and additional campus facilities for schools, faculty and students – PIT Alatau Investment Project of rebuilding abandoned complex.
