The National Library of Almaty hosted the presentation of “The Land of Six Cities”, a book by writer, publicist, and researcher Ismailzhan Iminov, published in commemoration of the 190th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Kazakh scholar, traveler, and enlightener Shokan Ualikhanov.
The book is the result of a large-scale expedition organized in July by public figures – Roman Botabekov, CEO of the Turan TV channel, and Assylbek Kozhakhmetov, President of AlmaU.
For AlmaU, participation in such initiatives is an integral part of the university’s mission – to maintain a living connection between academic knowledge, national history, and contemporary managerial and humanitarian practices.
The expedition brought together seven participants for whom Shokan Ualikhanov’s route became not only a geographical journey, but also an intellectual experience of rethinking the history of Central Asia. By retracing the path taken by the nineteenth-century scholar – from Almaty through Kyrgyzstan, Lake Issyk-Kul, the Torugart Pass, and on to the ancient city of Kashgar – the participants relived the spirit of scholarly inquiry, courage, and responsibility to history. ![]()
The book presentation gathered historians, researchers, writers, as well as government and public figures, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue and academic culture as foundations for sustainable societal development.
For AlmaU, such projects represent not only the preservation of historical memory, but also the cultivation of a new generation of leaders capable of long-term thinking, recognizing the connection between past and future, and assuming responsibility for the country’s intellectual development.
“The Land of Six Cities” is available at the AlmaU University Library and will serve as an important resource for students, researchers, and all those interested in the history of Central Asia and the legacy of Shokan Ualikhanov.
