Activities and documented evidence

AlmaU Joins the UN Climate Change Universities Partnership Programme

On 29 January 2026, AlmaU officially announced its participation in the UN Climate Change Universities Partnership Programme, an initiative of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The programme connects universities and experts working to advance knowledge, research and practical solutions in climate change adaptation.

Climate Education and Capacity Building

AlmaU integrates sustainability and environmental issues into its educational activities, including courses and learning modules addressing sustainable development, environmental management and responsible business practices. Climate-related education helps students understand the interaction between economic development, environmental risks, resource management and institutional decision-making.

Sponge City Kazakhstan: Applied Research on Urban Climate Adaptation

On 5 November 2025, AlmaU and Gumi Mix Group, a technology company based in Lithuania, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and launched the Sponge City Kazakhstan initiative. The project explores water-retention technologies and their potential application in climate-resilient urban environments.

Research on Water-Saving Technologies and Climate Resilience

Water security is a central climate adaptation challenge for Kazakhstan and the wider Central Asian region. AlmaU promotes interdisciplinary research and dialogue on water-saving technologies, sustainable urban infrastructure and efficient resource management.

International Climate Collaboration with Lehigh University

AlmaU collaborates with Lehigh University in the United States through interdisciplinary education and applied research initiatives. In May 2026, the universities implemented the Humanitarian Design and Social Entrepreneurship (HDSE) Leadership Intensive.

Climate Action Through Campus Sustainability

AlmaU’s Green University Policy, reviewed in 2025, provides an institutional framework for reducing the environmental footprint of campus activities. The policy promotes resource efficiency, responsible consumption, sustainable procurement, waste reduction and environmental awareness.
