2nd Conference «New Advances in the Political Economy of Development in Eurasia»
June 6-8, 2024, Almaty, Kazakhstan
KIMEP University and Almaty Management University, in association with the Harriman Institute at Columbia University and LMU Munich, are pleased to invite submissions to the 2nd Conference «New Advances in the Political Economy of Development in Eurasia» that will take place at Almaty Management University (June 6th and June 8th, 2024) and KIMEP (June 7th, 2024).
This conference shall be one of the most authoritative worldwide academic conventions of active scholars studying Eurasian politics in local and global context. Keynote speakers and contributors represent some of the best universities of in the world, including Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, University College of London, Freie Universitaet Berlin, and many others. Presenters shall use up-to-date theoretical approaches and quantitative data analysis techniques to address a wide spectrum of issues in contemporary Eurasian politics and policies, including military conflicts, sanctions, elections, media, multiethinic relations, and technological developments.
Topics covered by the participants include, but are not limited to:
· Comparative studies of governance
· Social capital, trust, and cultural norms
· Economic development and international sanctions
· Political elites and economic performance
· Internet, propaganda and persuasion
· Electoral processes and outcomes

On June 6 and 8, the conference shall be working at AlmaU, 227 Rozybakiyeva str., Almaty. On June 7, conference venue shall be KIMEP, 2 Abai ave.

GETTING FROM/TO AIRPORT (http://www.alaport.com; T.: +7727 222-15-51) By taxi The average cost is around 2500-3000KZT to get to the city center (payment preferred in cash in KZT). The safe choice would be to take the official taxi services or get taxi service from the Yandex / UBER KZ. You can always book transfer from your hotel. By bus to downtown/hotel Kazakhstan №86 from stop «Akademiya GA» to «Abay avenue» №92 takes you to stop «Abay avenue» There is also a night bus №3 to the city centre, but it is not a very reliable service. |
ACCOMMODATION (links to webpages): Almaty city has many lodging facilities, available through booking.com, aribnb or krisha.kz (local aggregator). Decent studios/flats conveniently located for the conference can be found from around 15K KZT. There are also many international quality hotels whose selective list (with links to webpages) is provided below. Please note that hotel rooms are running out quickly, so it is advisable to book them in advance.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Taxi is most convenient and quick transport. Economy ride within the city is under 2000 KZT (about US$4.5), depending on demand, traffic and daytime. In rush hours, please allow about 1 hour for a ride from KIMEP/downtown Almaty to AlmaU.

| Bus and trolleybus are the most common types of public transportation.
One-way ticket costs 150 KZT (cash only) / 100 KZT (with ONAY card). The public transport card called ONAY card can be purchased in small kiosks around the city or at the metro stations. Via ONAY app you may open a virtual card (app is available in Russian and Kazakh languages only). ONAY app also contains city map with bus routes and live movement of busses and trolleybuses.
